1. 1. 1 Overview
1.1 Vision
A sustainable agricultural sector, integrated rural development and food security for all.
1.2 Mission
To improve agricultural production to stimulate economic development, food security and integrated rural
development through:
x Integrated rural development;
x Agrarian reform;
x Sustainable livelihoods;
x Support land reform for agricultural production;
x Facilitating partnerships to commercialise and transformation of the agriculture sector;
x Innovation, research, technology development to increase productivity and competitiveness; and
x Access to opportunities for youth, women and other vulnerable groups.
1.3 Core functions and responsibilities
The core functions of the department are derived from its support and promotion of Agriculture and Rural
Development in the province. These functions include the following:
x Facilitation and coordination of Rural Development interventions in order to improve rural livelihoods;
x Facilitation, planning and promotion of the Rural Development Strategy in order to ensure that the
vision, mission and the pillars of the strategy are achieved;
x Agrarian Transformation and Food Security, supported by effective training, skills development and
extension services;
x Provide and support the development of infrastructure to achieve sustainable agriculture;
x Invest in High Impact Projects which add value in agriculture as a business; and
x Ensure that agricultural production is supported by the latest technology development and research.
