Source: Quantec & Stats SA, 2024 With regards to the sector%u2019s outlook, the sector is expected to experience a robust and sustained recovery as additional infrastructure projects pipelines in transport, renewable energies, water and housing secure the necessary public and private financial support. From the side of government expenditure on public infrastructure, expenditure will be ramped up over the coming medium-term as highlighted by the Minister of Finance in his recent budget speech. Commercial Services Broadly defined, the commercial services sector includes wholesale, retail, hotels and restaurants; transport and communication; finance and business services. Figure 1.20: Commercial Services GVA and Employment Source: Derived from Quantec 2024, Stats SA 2024 For the province, transport and communications, finance and business services have been the two subsectors that have consistently recorded an upward trend both in terms of output and employment. The growth of these sectors has been spurred by the emergence of service activities to support more traditional sectors such as manufacturing, construction, wholesale and retail. These new support services include business processes outsourcing, freight and delivery services, customised legal and accounting services, and ICT connectivity to support remote working. Investments in telecommunications and ICT have been critical in facilitating the burgeoning of these services sectors. 0.0020.0040.0060.0080.00100.00120.00140.002008q1 2008q4 2009q3 2010q2 2011q1 2011q4 2012q3 2013q2 2014q1 2014q4 2015q3 2016q2 2017q1 2017q4 2018q3 2019q2 2020q1 2020q4 2021q3 2022q2 2023q1 2023q4Trade GVATrade employment IndexTrade - Wholesale, Retail, Hotels 0.0020.0040.0060.0080.00100.00120.00140.00160.002008q1 2009q1 2010q1 2011q1 2012q1 2013q1 2014q1 2015q1 2016q1 2017q1 2018q1 2019q1 2020q1 2021q1 2022q1 2023q1 2024q1Trans & com GVATransport & Com.
