In terms of human settlements, in 2023 the Eastern Cape Province recorded the lowest number of households with formal housing at 77.7 per cent whilst a total of 83.5 per cent of households in SA had access to formal housing. Other provinces which are doing well in ensuring increased access to formal dwellings include Limpopo (95.1 per cent), Mpumalanga (90.1 per cent) and Northern Cape (86.0 per cent). In terms of informal housing, a total of 4.8 per cent of households lived in informal housing in the EC Province, whilst the country recorded a higher 12.2 per cent of households. Other provinces with similarly low levels of informal dwelling include KZN (5.4 per cent) and the lowest is Limpopo (2.5 per cent. It is concerning that the EC Province also recorded the highest total) of households (17.1 per cent) who lived in traditional houses whilst only an average of 3.9 per cent of households in SA live in traditional dwellings. KZN also recorded a high number of households living in traditional dwellings (10.3 per cent). Whilst the economic provincial hubs Gauteng and Western Cape as well as the Northern Cape recorded low number of households living in traditional dwellings at 0.0 per cent and 0.1 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively. 9
