Whilst SA recorded an average of 66.0 per cent of households with access to flushed toilets and 17.3 had pit latrine toilets totally 83.3 per cent having access to improved sanitation facilities. Government can be commended on the significant increase in access to improved sanitation over a twenty-year period from 33.4 per cent to 88.1 per cent provincially and from 61.7 per cent to 83.3 per cent nationally. However, there is still 0.9 per cent and 2.2 per cent of households respectively within SA and the Province who are without any sanitation facilities. 14
